Jerusalem’s second-largest apartment complex to reopen after four years of closure

Jerusalem’s first-largest residential complex, Avenue 5, will reopen after more than four years in disrepair.

The complex, which is located on the eastern edge of the Old City and is home to some 3,000 apartments, was closed down in 2011 after the Israeli military declared the area a military zone and ordered it to be demolished.

In December, a military court decided to keep the complex open for two more years.

It will reopen on February 11 after the completion of the rehabilitation program.

The Israeli government had announced it was seeking to demolish the complex.

In a press release, it said it was “trying to get the building rebuilt in accordance with the needs of the community.”

It added that the construction of new buildings would cost “at least 20 percent more.”

Israel has imposed restrictions on building in the Old Jerusalem, including restrictions on Palestinian and international visitors.
