Which type of treatment facility is best for you?
A new study from The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston and the University of California San Francisco found that residential treatment facilities were the most effective way to treat a person with mental illness.
The findings suggest that many states have policies in place to help people with mental illnesses, but the study suggests that policies can be tailored to the individual and the facility.
“There is a large body of research showing that the type of facility that best meets the needs of an individual, that person’s needs, and their treatment needs, is the residential treatment program,” said Dr. David B. Binder, associate professor of psychiatry at the University at Buffalo.
Binder has been studying residential treatment programs since the early 1990s.
The study, published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, included nearly 100 patients with depression and bipolar disorder.
“It’s a combination of things that is effective,” said Binder.
“We have this very complex set of criteria that is used by the federal government to assess whether a facility is safe for a patient.
Binder said that there are also a number of ways that residential care is different from the rest of mental health treatment. “
It’s an enormous set of factors that have to be taken into consideration, and the best kind of treatment is based on those criteria.”

“There’s a lot more of a emphasis on a lot of individualized, individualized treatments,” he said.
“The most common, most effective treatments are inpatient treatments, where you are in a setting with a team of professionals who work with you and treat you,” said study author Dr. Christopher A. Paretti.
“That’s the most focused treatment that’s going to work best for people.”
For some patients, such as someone with bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, it can be difficult to get a place to live that works for them, said Paretti.
“But it’s also very easy to get access to other services if you have a severe illness.”
You need to have a mental health crisis.
People who are mentally ill often have a lot to be anxious about.
So we think of the residential program as the first line of defense,” he added.
Benders study found that the average cost of a residential treatment visit was $3,800. “
What we found is that in a number to a large degree the policies were really successful, and we did not find any evidence of increased rates of hospitalization or increased costs,” he noted.

In addition, some residential treatment centers charge up to $500 for an evaluation.
“We found no evidence that residential therapy was better than other forms of treatment, but we did find that in some cases it could be better,” said Peretti.
“Our study suggests the best option for treatment is to go in and have a meeting with a psychiatrist who will assess you, and then you can make an appointment with a physician,” he explained.
In addition to improving the quality of care and the ability to get help for depression and anxiety, residential treatment can help people manage symptoms of depression, Binder added.
“So we can actually help people who have depression and who are at risk of being depressed.”
Paretti added that residential programs have been proven to reduce the risk of suicide among people with a mental illness, which is the leading cause of death in the United States.
