‘First service residential’: First residential door designs are on the rise
In a few months, residential design students at Yale will begin taking classes in the design of the first residential doors in a residential building.
This will be the first time residential design classes will be offered in New Haven.
The students will use materials they have been developing for years to create the first, first-service residential doors.
Yale Residential College will host the first class on September 25 at the New Haven Museum of Art.
“The first residential door design classes are exciting because they are an opportunity to take a fresh look at the concept of first-served-residential,” said Robert Siegel, director of the Yale Residential College and associate professor of design.
When students enter the building, they will use a variety of materials to create one-of-a-kind residential designs.
They will be expected to create designs that are atypical for residential use.
To be eligible for the class, students must first have completed a Residential Design Program.
Students will receive materials to complete their first-serve residential design.
The Yale Residential Design program began in 2008, and it is offered in six residential colleges and schools: Yale College, University of New Haven, Yale University, The College of William and Mary, Yale College at Mount Holyoke, Yale Graduate School of Design and Graduate School at the Graduate School.
A new class will be introduced every six months and the program has since grown to include a number of residential colleges.
Siegel said that, in addition to a variety in materials, the program also includes a curriculum for students, including materials for interior design, architectural planning, planning for space, architecture, and sustainability.
After completing the design classes, students will be able to apply to the residential design program.
For students interested in working on the first-serviced residential doors, Siegel said, the Residential Design School offers an opportunity for students to work on a design for a project for the residential program, including an initial proposal and design for the project.
The design classes and the residential department will be available for students and the public through September 25.
